The Ngarigo people are the people of the Snowy Mountains and southeast NSW, whose traditional lands also extend around the present border with Victoria.
The Ngarigo hunted and lived on the Monaro during the warmer weather and travelled during the colder months visiting other tribes to celebrate occasions, form unions and gather food. They hunted the abundant wildlife and collected plants like mountain celery and alpine baeckea for medicinal purposes.
Many aboriginal artifacts and other evidence have been found throughout the region including items such as tools for hunting, food and medicine preparation, graves, personal items and feasting and ceremonial sites.
During the original subdivision and development of the land on which Hygge Eco Cabins is situated, several artifacts were uncovered and reported to authorities. They included quartz and silcrete items that showed evidence of honing. One was believed to be for the use of chopping or cutting purposes. These items prove the site was part of areas used by the traditional custodians and has a close connection with the indigenous history of the area.
